In the face of the threat of climate change, the development of renewable energy has become one of the important mitigation actions. In order to enable teachers and students of the College of Environmental Studies and Oceanography (CESO) to understand the current status of renewable energy development and industry in Taiwan and internationally, the college invited AUO Energy Business Division Vice President Tian-Yu Lin to give a speech on November 22, 2022, with the topic of "Tap into renewable energy transformation and business opportunities".
The presentation analyzed the current supply and demand of renewable energy in Taiwan, the global efforts toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, and the history and prospects of AUO. Finally, he offered his perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing renewable energy in Taiwan. During the Q&A session, Vice President Lin addressed questions raised by faculty and students, such as "how Taiwan, an island nation with a small land area and dense population, can simultaneously develop different types of renewable energy?" "Is Taiwan's geology and topography suitable for the development of various renewable energy sources?" "Does the production of solar panels produce environmentally harmful substances?" "In the event of a natural disaster (typhoon, earthquake, landslide, or flood), will damaged panels have an environmental impact?" "How should they be recycled?" In his responses to these questions, Vice President Lin provided faculty and students with an understanding of AUO's approach to these potential challenges and its commitment to corporate responsibility in addressing environmental and social issues.
After the keynote speech, the center also invited Vice President Lin to have a lunch discussion with the center members to share the center’s research and investigation on large-scale photovoltaic projects in Hualien and discuss their views on the development of solar photovoltaics in Taiwan.
