National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) and AUO Corporation held a signing ceremony for a memorandum of cooperation on May 23rd. The memorandum aims to promote sustainable green energy development and ecological coexistence and prosperity, and to advance collaboration in photovoltaic development, environmental and ecological research, and social responsibility. The signing ceremony was signed by NDHU President Han-Jieh Zhao and AUO Vice President Tian-Yu Lin.

President Zhao of NDHU stated, "AUO is a company with a strong ESG philosophy. Its comprehensive sustainability performance has been highly praised. With a long-term business strategy, it is a very solid enterprise. I deeply admire AUO's willingness to collaborate with various industries, including insurance and financial companies, to promote meaningful causes for humanity. NDHU is the only comprehensive public university in Hualien, boasting abundant resources and talent. I believe that through multifaceted collaboration with AUO, the future prospects for mutual cooperation are promising. On behalf of the university, I would like to express my gratitude to AUO."

AUO Vice President Lin expressed his honor to visit NDHU and the opportunity to receive the resources and guidance from the College of Environmental Studies and Oceanography. On the road to energy transformation, society still has much to learn from. In the past, as a tech industry, we primarily approached technical problems with an engineer's mindset. Over the years, we've realized our understanding of the environment and biodiversity is limited. We hope to use this opportunity to gain more expert insights. As engineers, we love solving problems. If we can find a problem, we'll find a way to solve it. This is AUO's commitment.

To further foster mutual understanding between AUO and CIRES and lay a solid foundation for future collaboration, a special symposium was held following the signing ceremony. CIRES Director I-Fang Sun addressed the daunting challenges of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and achieving Taiwan's 2050 net-zero target in the face of increasingly severe global warming, a problem that cannot be solved by a single discipline. Leveraging the interdisciplinary strengths of faculty at the NDHU College of Environmental Studies and Oceanography, the center, comprised of seven faculty members from the natural sciences and social sciences, focused on issues related to renewable energy development, hoping to develop an integrated socio-ecological system assessment model to provide potential solutions.

Vice President Lin mentioned that the solar power plant is currently being developed by Star Energy, a joint venture between AUO, Taiwan Life Insurance, and Fubon Life Insurance. Star Energy's funds are 100% dedicated to Taiwan's renewable energy sector and are committed to the long-term development of Taiwan's electricity industry. Vice President Lin expressed his gratitude for this dialogue and opportunity for collaboration, and strongly agreed with Director Sun's suggestion that large-scale planning is necessary for ground-mounted solar power plants. He expressed his hope that by leveraging the experience and knowledge of the center's faculty, he could identify practical, sustainable solutions for Taiwan.
